Fifteen days of Fasting

This weekend I decided to end my juice fast. I was fifteen days into it and feeling good. I decided that I’d had a good spring cleansing; the minor allergic reactions that I was having had subsided, my skin and tongue were clear. And I felt really ready to eat!

However, I also decided that I was still going to stay raw for a while…

On Saturday I had only juices during most of the day, straining them only slightly and leaving most of the fiber in the juice. My first juice in the morning, after a glass of water with the juice of one lime, was cantaloupe, made with 2 cups of water using 1/2 of a melon, followed by a green juice of pineapple and spinach at midday.

Late in the afternoon it was time for some solids, and the other half of the cantaloupe went down really well, simple cut into chunks and well chewed. In the early evening I had a salad made of two grated carrots, 1/2 a grated beet, 1/4 of a grated red pepper, and a handful of alfalfa sprouts, seasoned with herbs, lemon juice, Bragg’s Liquid Aminos and a small dribble of avocado oil mixed with extra virgin olive oil. Again, I made sure to chew everything thoroughly. I tend to inhale food, so I had to make a conscious effort to slow down, and that effort I would like to cultivate into a standard eating habit.

On Sunday I again started with just juices, this time blending up 1/4 of a watermelon with about six leaves of romaine lettuce and a small handful of spinach. I first whipped up the watermelon juice and strained out the seeds before adding the greens; that way I was able to leave the spinach and lettuce pulp in the mix. Mid-afternoon I was getting hungry and decided to make some veggie sushi rolls, processing grated carrot, green onion, red pepper into a fairly fine mush, seasoning it with tamari and fresh pressed garlic and a touch of Satay sauce, and rolling it with shredded lettuce into two sheets of nori seaweed. They turned out a little moist and mushy, but very tasty.

That evening I whipped up a frozen banana with about 1/2 cup of frozen mango–the best fruit ice ever–and chewed on a few raw almonds. A mugful of turmeric milk (turmeric powder steeped in water and almond milk, apparently highly anti-oxidant) completed the menu for the day.

Today I started out with a totally unstrained pineapple and cucumber smoothie made with 1/2 water and 1/2 freshly squeezed orange juice. I’m making my way through slightly over one liter of that and I also had a cup of green tea. As to how I’m going to continue the day, I really have no idea. I think I’ll go shopping and see what inspires me!
