January 2006 Newsletter

Zihuatanejo, Mexico. January 2006

Well here we are, already... 2006. Who would've believed, pre-2000, that it would come upon us so quickly? We're into the 2nd half of the decade and it's wild to think that there are only 4 years to go until we hit 2010!!

Personally, our holiday activities were laid-back but fun. Pre-Christmas celebrations found us enjoying the festivities at A.J. and Isabels on Las Gatas when they hosted a lovely afternoon of company, food, drink, music, sun and sand. For Christmas weekend itself, John and I travelled up the coast to visit brother Kyle at Nexpa Point near Caleta de Campos, where we were happy to escape the local crowds and get away from the telephone and computers for a few days! Back in Zihua after Christmas, a bevy of family descended upon us from Canada, Chile and other areas of Mexico we had a full house and family members in residence that spanned 4 generations

New Years Eve was spent very pleasantly at our good friend Leonora's yearly gathering overlooking Zihuatanejo bay, She has the best vantage point possible for the year-end fireworks, not to mention the generally gorgeous view of the town lights over the water - we could even spot some of the Ixtapa fireworks bubbling and sparkling over the hilltop - and the fact that Leonora always puts on a splendid spread and is hostess par excellance. After the fireworks we spent a bit of time dancing to some great salsa down at Bandido's - helped clear the head after all that New Years cheer...

New Year's Day we lazed around our own Stick House on the chairs and hammocks of the porch, again with the whole family and a number of friends. It was quite yummy - we grazed on black- eyed peas and cabbage, Chilean wine, smoked salmon and king crab. Makes my stomach protest just thinking about it.

Now we're settling into a more regular schedule, but there are a number of really special events coming up, so be sure to mark them on your calendars. The places where one can dance are particularly important since we now have to wear off all the extra poundage of the holidays...

Mighty Mike Schermer is back at the Blue Mamou and he's pulling in a crowd. If you saw him when he was at the club last year, you'll know he's an incredible guitarist and performer and will surely want to stop by and listen to more of his music. If you haven't heard him yet, be sure to schedule him in - he'll be playing for a couple of weeks now, will take a break and then will be back again at the end of the month and into February, so there's no excuse for not getting over there at least once, if not once or twice a week. Remember, Wednesday nights are jam night!

January 6th is the opening of the Jorge Rosano art exhibit, showing his 3-D cut paper sculptures, at Coconuts Restaurant in downtown Zihua. Cocktail starts 7 pm.

Stop by Rick's Bar after 7 pm on January 14th to attend the special Martini Sampler in benefit of the 3rd Annual International Guitar Festival. $200 pesos will get you 5 samples of Rick's very specially flavored martinis that will be accompanied by good live music and general fun. The musicians line has now been publicized on the Guitar Fest website at http://www.zihuafest.info, so check it out.

If you want to help out as a volunteer, click here (http://www.zihuafest.info/sponsors/volunteers.html) and fill out the form.

If you want to buy an Ad in the Official Program for Guitar Fest 2006, click here here (http://www.zihuafest.info/sponsors/advertiser.html) and fill out the form. Prices are very reasonable: $1,200 pesos for 1/3 page, $1,800 pesos for 1/2 page and $3,500 pesos for an interior full page color ad...

Forms can be faxed to 553-8968 or turned in to the Guitar Fest helpers at the Martini Sampler event.

On January 14th there's also a cocktail party, exhibition and raffle at Zih Gallery de Arte in celebration of their 5th anniversary. The gallery is located on Juan N Alvarez 290, downtown Zihua (the first street back from the beach a few doors toward the pier from Garrobo's). 7 pm on.

Galart will have a Jewellry exhibition opening at La Cantina Bar & Grill, Hotel Villa del Sol, on January 21st, 7-10 pm.

Zihua Sailfest is coming up, Feb. 1 through 5 - sail parade, races, games, cookoffs - bunches of fun. Take a look at the full schedule on the website: http://www.zihuasailfest.com

More special events in February are listed on the Another Day in Paradise upcoming events page in the January 2006 edition which is now on-line. The mag is chock-full of great articles and photos and just doesn't fail to get better with every issue.

Read ADiP on-line at http://www.adip.info or look for a print copy around town. Print copies contain additional materials not available in the on-line version.
