March 2006 Newsletter

Zihuatanejo, Mexico. March 2006

Happy Spring!

When living in a tropical spot like our Zihuatanejo paradise, it's easy to forget what it's like in the far northern and southern regions of the world where the seasons are marked with wide variations in temperature, extra-long or extra-short days and very notable changes in vegetation. Here, we have our "high season" and "low season" or our "dry season" and our "wet (or green) season"... distinctions that, to begin with, are not as marked as those enforced by the north/south climatic extremes.

Now, with the larger influx of year-round tourism to the area, crowds of national tourists motoring down summer and winter from the interior of the country, more European and surfing tourism in the summer months, and increased direct flights and charters, as well as cruise ships, coming into town, those distinctions seem to be getting slighter and slighter. It's almost as if the only thing that marks one part of the year as different from another is the dry and the wet, and the fact that the sun, for a short time every winter season, sets itself directly down into the sea at the mouth of the bay when one watches it's decline from the stretches of Playa La Ropa. Granted, for those of us who live here year round, we DO also know that the evenings are cooler in March and April than in July and August, that the birds sing much louder in in the backwaters and estuaries during the rites of Spring, that San Juan ants come out only on or about the 24th of June, and that the Bocote trees are only wreathed in white flowers in the late fall. But lately, our beaches almost always seem full; the streets of town, almost always crowded with crawling cars and fast-moving pedestrians. What happened to the "low season" when there was absolutely nothing to do in town, and almost everything shut down, and we could rest in our hammocks without traffic kicking up dust all around us? Such is the price of growth and progress.

What's happening around town
