Northward of Zihuatanejo on the coast of the neighboring Mexican state Michoacan is the town of Caleta de Campos and the surfing community of Barra de Nexpa. We regularly take weekend trips there from Zihuatanejo for a change of scenery. The drive takes you along the coast and past the large shipping port of Lazaro Cardenas, about 2-1/2 hours in duration under normal conditions. The coastline just north of Lazaro Cardenas and Playa Azul is quite flat with wide, sandy beaches. As you travel northward, the highway moves into the more rugged, rockier Michoacan coast, which is absolutely gorgeous.
